Walcott Truckers Jamboree Kicks Off Next Week

Iowa 80 Truckstop’s 36th Annual Walcott Truckers Jamboree will kick off next week on July 9th for three full days of everything trucking.

The event will feature nearly 175 exhibits; a Super Truck Beauty Contest, Antique Truck Display; Iowa pork chop cookout; Trucker Olympics; carnival games; several free concerts:  Natalie Stovall & The Drive on July 9th courtesy of CAT Scale and Lindsay Lawler and The Josh Abbott Band on July 10th presented by Mobil Delvac and local bands North of 40 and Dani Lynn Howe & Band also will perform. There will be fireworks displays on Thursday and Friday night and loads of fun for the whole family!  Friday afternoon attendees can enjoy a piece of cake at the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum in celebration of the 1915 Mack AB truck’s 100th birthday.

“We are celebrating America’s truckers and the hard work they do to keep this country moving,” says Delia Moon Meier, owner. “We are proud and honored to have been serving professional drivers for over 51 years. It’s really neat to see third and even fourth generation drivers who stop at Iowa 80,” says Meier.

The first Walcott Truckers Jamboree only attracted a few hundred people in 1979 and featured a few exhibits, live music, food and a small display of antique trucks.  Last year’s event attracted over 44,000 attendees.  Celebrating America’s Truckers is why the Jamboree was founded all those years ago and is still at the very core of the event.  It is Iowa 80’s way of thanking drivers for all of their hard work and dedication in hauling America’s freight.

The 36th Annual Walcott Truckers Jamboree, will be held July 9-11, 2015 at Iowa 80 Truckstop, I-80 Exit 284, Walcott, Iowa. Admission and parking are FREE!  Shuttles will be provided from the parking area to the event grounds.

Stone Country.”

“Lindsay is the spokesperson for trucking’s Highway Angel Program and brings a lot of spunk to her
performance.”

bringing the party to Walcott,” laughs DeBaillie. “We’ll be glad to have them perform here again.”
Local favorite Dani Lynn Howe & Band will perform Saturday afternoon, July 11th. “Anyone

CAT Scale Company Opens 1,500th Truck Scale

CAT Scale Company celebrated the opening of its 1,500th truck scale on January 30, 2014 at the Love’s Country Store, I-15 & Exit 260 in Springville, Utah.  “When we started CAT Scale I don’t think my dad ever envisioned we’d have 1,500 scales in operation,” says Delia Moon Meier, Senior Vice President.  “We appreciate our continued partnership with Love’s Country Stores and the Love Family.”

Mr. Moon installed the first CAT Scale in 1977 in South Holland, Illinois.  In 1988, there were 28 CAT Scales in existence.  At that time the company began to rapidly expand.  Now there are 1,500 CAT brand scales in 47 states and 7 Canadian provinces with more opening each month.

Professional drivers need to comply with stringent weight regulations.  The potential fines associated with violating such regulations can be very costly, so CAT Scale Company provides a much needed service to the trucking public.  CAT brand scales are covered by an unconditional guarantee.  If a driver receives an overweight fine after weighing legal on a CAT brand scale, CAT Scale Company will either pay the fine or appear in court with the driver as an expert witness in order to get the fine dismissed.  In either scenario, the driver is covered by the guarantee and does not have to pay the fine, as long as they weighed on a CAT brand scale prior to receiving the citation.

CAT Scale Company is the world leader in truck scales and the world’s largest truck scale network.  More information on CAT Scale can be found on-line at www.catscale.com.

Happy Birthday Iowa 80!

The World’s Largest Truckstop Celebrates
50 Years of Serving the Professional Driver

WALCOTT, IOWA —  Iowa 80 Truckstop began serving truckers out of a small white enamel building in 1964 before Interstate 80 was completely built.  Bill Moon, Iowa 80 founder, located the spot, at what is now Exit 284, for Standard Oil. They built and opened the truck stop with Bill taking over management a year later, in 1965.  Years passed, Interstate 80 was completed and hundreds, then thousands of truckers and travelers stopped by Iowa 80 to fuel, grab a bite to eat and head on down the road.  In 1984, Standard Oil (now Amoco) decided to sell the facility.  Bill Moon, who had been managing the place for nearly 20 years, jumped at the chance.  He and his wife Carolyn, leveraged everything they had, including borrowing money from friends, to purchase Iowa 80.

Once the Moon Family owned Iowa 80, they could expand the building and add services as needed.  “Bill just loved everything about trucks and trucking,” says Carolyn Moon.  “He loved to sit at the counter in the restaurant and talk to drivers about what would make their life easier if Iowa 80 had it.  He truly enjoyed the truck stop business and all of the people he encountered.”

Today, after 28 expansions and remodels, Iowa 80 is overseen by the second generation of the Moon Family, and includes the Iowa 80 Kitchen, a 300-seat restaurant; gift store, the Super Truck Showroom, a dentist, a barber shop, a chiropractor, a workout room, laundry facilities, a 60-seat movie theatre, a trucker’s TV lounge, a Verizon store kiosk, 24 private showers, a Food Court featuring Wendy’s, Dairy Queen, Orange Julius, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Caribou Coffee; a convenience store, a custom embroidery and vinyl shop, 10 gas islands, 16 diesel lanes, a fuel center, a 7-bay truck service center, a 3-bay Truckomat truck wash, a CAT Scale, a Dogomat Pet Wash, and the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum.   “It is really amazing to have reached this milestone,” says Delia Moon Meier, Senior Vice President.  “We are so fortunate to have such wonderful, dedicated employees and loyal customers.  They are such an integral part of our success.”

Iowa 80 currently serves 5,000 customers per day and has parking spaces for 900 tractor-trailers, 250 cars and 20 buses.  Each year in July, the Iowa 80 hosts the Walcott Truckers Jamboree, a 3-day event dedicated to Celebrating America’s Truckers.  Last year attendance hit a record 42,000 people.  “Without truck drivers doing the job they do, our economy wouldn’t function.  We appreciate their hard work and the Walcott Truckers Jamboree is our way of saying Thank You,” says Meier.

A book celebrating Iowa 80’s 50 years in business is underway and will be available this spring.  For more information about Iowa 80, visit www.iowa80truckstop.com or find Iowa 80 on Facebook at www.facebook.com/iowa80WLT.

Both Thursday night and Friday night included fireworks displays, a truck light show and loads of fun!

“The Walcott Truckers Jamboree is a celebration of trucking,” said Heather DeBaillie, Iowa 80 Truckstop’s marketing director. “It is how we say thank you to the thousands of men and women who work hard to deliver the goods we need.  The Jamboree is also a good opportunity for us to showcase the trucking industry to the general public.”

The Iowa 80 Trucking Museum hosted a party of its own on July 12th to celebrate the 100th birthday of its 1913 Rambler Truck in the museum’s collection.  “This Rambler was a plumber’s truck and had been used locally for years.  When we purchased it the truck needed a lot of work done.  Once we were able to get the truck running the original owner’s son came out and were able to give him a ride in it.” said Dave Meier, museum curator.  “He told us stories about how he used to help his dad on plumbing jobs back in the 1920s.” Hundreds joined in the celebration that included a birthday cake and balloons.

The Walcott Truckers Jamboree has been celebrating truckers, rain or shine, since 1979.   “We hope the Walcott Truckers Jamboree is an event that encourages drivers to celebrate the important job they do.  We certainly appreciate the professional driver and this is the perfect chance for us to say thank you,” says Delia Moon Meier, Iowa 80 Truckstop Senior Vice President.

The event will feature nearly 175 exhibits; a Super Truck Beauty Contest, Antique Truck Display; Iowa pork chop cookout; Trucker Olympics; carnival games; two free concerts: Lindsay Lawler on July 11th courtesy of CAT Scale and Blackberry Smoke on July 12th presented by Mobil Delvac; a fireworks display and loads of fun for the whole family!  Admission and parking are FREE!  Shuttles will be provided from the parking area to the event grounds.

The first Walcott Truckers Jamboree only attracted a few hundred people in 1979 and featured a few exhibits, live music, food and a small display of antique trucks.  Today, the Walcott Truckers Jamboree attracts approximately 30,000 attendees.  Celebrating America’s Truckers is why the Jamboree was founded all those years ago and is still at the very core of the event.  It is Iowa 80’s way of thanking drivers for all of their hard work and dedication in hauling America’s freight.

Iowa 80 Trucking Museum to Host 100th Birthday Party for 1913 Rambler

Iowa 80 Trucking Museum will host a 100th Birthday party for its 1913 Rambler truck on Friday, July 12th at 2:30 pm.  The event will coincide with this year’s Walcott Truckers Jamboree, July 11-13.  The public is welcome to attend the celebration.

“This Rambler is a rare piece of trucking history.” says Dave Meier, museum curator. “Not many Rambler trucks were produced and this is the only one we’ve come across.  We purchased it from a gentleman in Geneseo, Illinois.  The truck had been used as a plumber’s truck in the Moline-Rock Island area.”

Thomas B. Jeffrey built and sold Rambler bicycles from 1878 to 1900.  He was one of America’s first men interested in building automobiles. His experimental prototypes in the early 1900’s included such radical ideas as steering wheels and front mounted engines.  A wide variety of styles of cars were built under the Rambler name, including trucks.  Upon Jeffrey’s death in 1902, his son Charles took over the business and in 1914 renamed it Jeffrey, which became the world’s largest producer of trucks during WWI.

NEWTON, Iowa (August 6, 2011) – When the No. 01 Chevrolet of JD Motorsports rolled into Iowa Speedway for the NASCAR Nationwide Series race this weekend, they had a blank hood on the car.

“Many people think that electric vehicles are a recent invention, when in fact they were in production over 100 years ago.” says Dave Meier, museum curator.

The Walker Vehicle Company was based in Chicago, Illinois and manufactured electric vehicles until late 1941. Walker trucks were used mainly as delivery trucks in major cities; delivering ice cream and other dairy products, baked goods and dry goods. This particular truck was owned by Bowman Dairy and used to deliver milk to hospitals, restaurants and hotels.  Electric vehicles were popular in the late-19th century and early 20th century, until advances in internal combustion engine technology and mass production of cheaper gasoline vehicles led to a decline in their use.

Iowa 80 Trucking Museum purchased this particular truck at an auction several years ago.  It is one of only a handful of Walker Electric trucks known to still exist.
